CO-LINGUAL COURSE

Create your first wood-turned objects

This course introduces you to woodturning, a creative technique that allows you to craft unique pieces through the movement and precision of your tools. You’ll learn about the components of the lathe, the tools used, and the basics of woodturning. You’ll then put these concepts into practice by making a mallet and then turning a small object of your choice.

PLEASE NOTE : This course is co-lingual (French–English), which means that francophone and anglophone participants form a single group and attend the same classes. The trainer adjusts the language of teaching to accommodate the group or alternates between French and English. All participants may speak the language of their choice, and the trainer will make sure that everyone understands the content.

It is not necessary to be bilingual to register, but basic understanding of both languages may be helpful. Because this course is based on manual work and individual exploration, it is particularly well suited to this way of working. We consider linguistic diversity an asset, and we ask that you show inclusiveness, kindness, and respect.

Answers to frequently asked questions about woodturning

What is woodturning?

Woodturning is a technique that involves using tools to carve shapes into wood while it rotates. It is an extremely rewarding creative activity that highlights the art of craftsmanship, allowing you to quickly create unique wooden objects as you work.

What tools and equipment are used in woodturning?

During turning, the pieces of wood are secured to a lathe and driven by a motor that causes them to rotate. A variety of cutting tools are used to shape the rotating pieces of wood.

We’ll teach you about the components of the lathe, as well as the tools and how to sharpen them. We provide access to professional-grade wood lathes, as well as a variety of cutting tools, such as chisels, gouges, and scrapers.

What is spindle turning?

There are two main woodturning techniques: spindle turning and faceplate turning (using a chuck). They differ in how the piece of wood is secured to the lathe, which affects the angle at which the wood can be cut while it is rotating.

In this course, you will learn spindle turning between centers, a technique in which the piece of wood is secured at both ends by two centers. When spindle turning, you generally work with the grain, meaning the wood fibers run parallel to the axis of rotation.
